the Texas mid-late 80s scene has a good bunch of bands that fit the description, several already mentioned, what the hell was going on in that place huh!

I think a lot of them looked up to Helstar a lot and then Watchtower? That's how I explain the particular Texas sound.

Yes, and (SA) Slayer and maybe Juggernaut were doing some pretty advanced things too, albeit probably a bit more "rooted" in the seventies.

And there were also a exchange of some members between bands like MILITA, ASSAILANT, SCYTHIAN OATH, OBLIVION KNIGHT, SYRUS, WATCHTOWER, S.A. SLAYER and others.

That might help explain some of the similarities of those bands.

Here is my list.

Enchanter -- A total worship

False Witness - This absolute Power

Dead Calm - Elegance and Power in a single band!

Zions Abyss - The band that helped us man of us to discover the genre, as a starting point.

Slauter Xstroyes - Out of this world

Kingsbane - Words are needless I guess

Jesters March - Total elegance. One of my favorites

A shattered dream - This is pure power

Latent fury - - Sure on my top five demos ever

Lethal - - Classic stuff.

Mystic Force - I am sure they have mixed Power and Prog in their own unique way

New Eden - More into the Power side but still technical

Guardian Angel - This band from Greece is REALLY magic. Not in the typical US style but still absolutely GREAT Power / Prog stuff.

WatchTower - Dangerous games...

SmokeScreen - Simply great....

Raging Grace - Once more... dimply great

Autumn Silence - There is something mysterious in this band! I like em a a lot.

Syris - Words are not enough.

August - Really really great stuff.

Screamer - Classic.

Omega Point - IF you are into the good Ryche era THIS is your band I guess.

Sanctum - favorite.

Kingsbane - Can wait for my CD on the post :)

Oracle - As darkness reigns is a true masterpiece.

Kings Ransom - GREAT!

Still wonder if I should add Longings Past to the list. But I guess they were more into Epic stuff although still with a very unique sound and many Prog elements -thanks to Rush- on their music.

A few more to add

ALTERED STATE - Demo band with Ski of Deadly Blessing on vox. Insanely complex vocal patterns and very intense

ARIOCH - The NY band, very powerful stuff, great vocals, not so prog though

HIDDEN CRYSTAL - Swiss band, instrumental demo only, but it's really awesome

HYD - The TX band, in the classic TX metal style, not overly aggressive though

INNER SANCTUM - from TX, three track demo, last track is amazing

INNER STRENGTH - Retrospect rerelease their demos, excellent stuff, connections with ARIOCH

LORDS OF MEAT - 90s band, some very nice tracks in their demo

MAJESTY - the pre- DREAM THEATER band, "Another won", "March of the tyrant" are classics, similar style to the DT debut

NEMESIS - The greek band, first demo rips
