Dreadful, hopeless and terrified: that would be everything that's r&b.

Most haunting beginning of song for me is Retrosatan- Grito Mortal.
Those children singing, gives me the creeps.

And for a song as a whole: Ripper - Death Awaits You

A few off the top of my head, including some non-metal:

Fates Warning- guradian
Chameleons- less than human
Chameleons- here today (others from 'script of the bridge' too)
Anathema- deep
The Cure- cold (most of 'pornography')

How come no one mentioned Children Of The Grave yet? Those drums sounds more like skulls and bones then toms.

I'm casting my vote on Crimson Glory's "Lost Reflection". Midnight R.I.P.

It's so epic and there is so much to it - it's like the perfect novel for me, but the middle section with Steve's bass riff and the narrative, then the break, the story of the albatross, arggghhhh!!! Maybe my interpretation of haunting is different from yours but this song always conveys to me this dark world of piracy, shipwrecks, dying at sea, spirits of dead sailors....

How about Hallow's Eve by Hallow's Eve. That song is pretty creepy.
Someone already mentioned Psychopath by Saint Vitus...

Good call, Mitch! Actually the whole album falls into the "sending shivers down the spine" category.

While Heaven Wept "Thus With a Kiss I Die", from their Lovesongs of the Forsaken demo tape/CD, also included in the 1989-2002 double LP anthology.
