msp, you missed out Classic Rock magazine, which has a far wider scope than you'd probably think. The writers of the mag also include names from "Sounds" & the early "Kerrang!" era, before the magazine became a joke. A varied and well-written read, give it a try if you haven'...

So when you gonna give us this porno mag story then Korgull? It's not that exciting, but when I was about 14 or so I used to sell newspapers at a busy intersection for this guy who ran/owned the local newsagency. I used to go to the store directly after school everyday & drop my bag off, go sel...

If it weren't for the album covers I probably would not have picked up VENOM-BLACK METAL and WITCHFINDER GENERAL-DEATH PENALTY on vinyl back in the early 80's. There are many other albums I bought just because the cover told me what the lyrics and music would be like but these are glaring examples....

If memory serves, the sticker on the Rox album was £2:99 or so, so although crime didn't pay for me, it benefitted him nicely. As far as i remember, i told him the full story, that i'd meant to steal the Evil record but wound up with Rox by mistake, although i may have left out some of the fin...

There were more obscure Heavy sounding Psychedelic bands.Check out for example Neurotic (US) Heavy Shit here. Wow! This is a new one to me, the tracks on the myspace site sound great, do you know if the rest of the "Mazy Craniacs" album is of this same standard? Thanks very much for the t...

Glad you all found my recollection of my short-lived criminal "career" amusing. There's a bit of a post script to the story too, but i'll try & be briefer this time. I did indeed avoid the record stall for the next couple of months, but eventually decided to front up and confess my cri...

Good call Rock Beast, i already have their "Anthology" album, which compiles the first 2 albums & the ep, nice stuff, i'm not sure if their reformation was any good though, is "Still Screaming" worth getting?

I don't know about the I-Pod kiling music, i seem to remember many such claims being made about "home taping" in the '80's, and it's still with us. I do think it could have a knock on effect on album artwork however. With more & more people only ever seeing album artwork on a two inch ...

Best blog there is. So good in fact, that a rather large part of my present taste in music can be traced back to this blog. For this, I owe you eternal gratitude. My wallet, on the other hand does not. :D Thanks very much for the kind words Khnud, glad you enjoy the work we put in over at NILOOB, i...

Oh wow the 'poser' term sure made this thread explode. Metal being dead after 1993 is an equally loaded statement. The 00's have had their share of great HM releases, though it is true that further down the line copycatting has become a bigger problem. But I bring attention to that copycatting was ...

My opinion, for what it's worth: There are a couple of more positive ways to look at it. For all us old timers (or newbies to the scene who are as enthralled by the "golden age" as we are), there are infinitely more ways for us to hear older bands who slipped through the cracks back then t...

Not really a "hunting" story, but it's close enough & i thought it might amuse you. About 25 years ago, (my god i'm so old), we had a little record stall in a local indoor market, the guy who owned it sold mostly mainstream stuff, but had great, if small, Metal & Punk sections too....

Haven't heard Jex Toth or Totem, sounds interesting.
Thanks for the tips.
